On Monday 18th July, we released the 1st single to be taken from our forthcoming album Tidal Patterns which will be released via 1631 Recordings in the Autumn.
This was actually one of the last songs that we wrote and recorded for the album and we tried a number of different versions before we settled on the final one. We were keen to write a simple string and brass piece for the album that was quite powerful and reflected the views out over the Atlantic from Coll of the often stormy, bleak expanse of the ocean. At the time of writing we’d been watching the Icelandic TV series ‘Trapped’ religiously and really loved the soundtrack by Jóhann Jóhannsson so there was definitely influence from his soundtrack when writing this piece.
We managed to get the super talented Nichola and Rachel in to lay down viola and cello, while Mike scored and recorded his cornet afterwards. Although it sounded beautiful, we felt that it needed something else as it was a bit too clean sounding in comparison to the rest of the record. Andy Bush had a Watkins Copicat tape echo effects unit in his studio and we decided to put everything through that – the result added so much texture and ambience to the music. It breathed new life into the piece.
The title Malin comes from the name of the shipping forecast in that area – we thought it was a suitable fit.
